Photo Tampering Throughout History

We all know by this time that any photo can be doctored if someone tries hard enough. Hany Farid has created a thorough documentary of altered photographs throughout history.

His career ranges "from working with federal law enforcement agencies on digital forensics, to the digital reconstruction of Ancient Egyptian tombs, Hany works and plays with digital media at the crossroads of computer science, engineering, mathematics, optics, and psychology."
He introduces the research with the following paragraph: "

Photography lost its innocence many years ago. In as early as the 1860s, photographs were already being manipulated, only a few decades after Niepce created the first photograph in 1814. With the advent of high-resolution digital cameras, powerful personal computers and sophisticated photo-editing software, the manipulation of digital images is becoming more common. Here, I have collected some examples of tampering throughout history.

To help contend with the implications of this tampering, we have developed a series of tools for detecting traces of tampering in digital images (contact me at Ma'at Consulting for more information about our services)"

Browsers are changing

Today’s web is changing fast to keep up with the times. The new browsers are using dynamically relevant search techniques to provide a more intuitive search results. They are also using images besides text to provide these results.

Microsoft has entered the search engine arena.

Search twitter, Google others simultaneously. The search engine provides entry to many different services immediately. Examples would be: news/blogs, images, Bing, eHow, YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, and others.

Spezify http://www.spezify.com/ The website states; “Spezify is a search tool presenting results from a large number of websites in different visual ways.” It is a search mashup web visualization that tries to provide a more intuitive experience showing your online presence.

His search uses a new concept of using images to find other images. Their website states: “Imprezzeo is an image-based search technology company. Our technology allows users to search for images using other images as examples rather than textual search terms. Those images might be scenes, landmarks, objects, graphics, people, or even personalities. Irrespective of the size of the collection, Imprezzeo Image Search helps you find the right image, fast.”

Surf Canyon http://www.surfcanyon.com/ Improves your search on Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and Craigslist. It helps you find information buried deep down in a site. It also personalizes your search making it more relevant as it reflects your actions and choices, dynamically updating your results page. .

Today’s activities mean that we are frequently not at our main computer when we need it. Everyone from teachers, students, and business people need to have a way to share or store files for easy access at sometime in the future.
Luckily the web 2.0 computer tools have bequeathed us with several sites that allow us to store or transfer files for free or a nominal.

Web and computer only
Drop.io http://drop.io/ “Simple real-time sharing, collaboration, and presentation.
Use drop.io to privately share your files and collaborate in real time by web, email, phone, mobile, and more. Create each drop in two clicks and share what you want, how you want, with whom you want.” There is a tutorial video on the main page. Users are allowed 100MB free per drop. Upgrading is necessary for larger files.

Tools that store and sync computers, the web (Cloud), and iPhone/Touch
SimplyBox http://simplybox.com is a very visual free service that works with your computer and syncs with the web and iPhone so that you can access it from anywhere. It allows you to capture, organize, and share what you find on the web. With it you can collaborate with others sharing what you find on the web with the establishment of shared, paired, and public boxes. A standalone app is also available for downloading and installation on as many computers as needed.

Mobile Me ww.me.com $99/yr $69/yr@Amazon is a well known Apple app that facilitates mac users keeping their life coordinated. It is very easy to move files and data around with the iDisk sync w/Mobile Me on iPhone

Box net www.box.net (also available for iPhone) Their web page states: “Sharing and collaboration are at the heart of the Box experience. As you exchange content with more and more people, the ability to effectively monitor the activity in collaboration folders takes on greater importance. That’s why we rolled out a new set of advanced email preferences - we wanted to give customers more flexibility in getting the notifications they want, when they want them. Of particular note is a new setting that lets you receive notifications in one “daily digest,” making it even more streamlined.” There are quite a few features that teachers and businesses will appreciate.

Drop Box www.dropbox.com (also available for iPhone) is a free online storage service that keeps your data in the cloud for access whenever and wherever you have internet access. Their website states: “Dropbox works just like any other folder on your computer, but with a few differences it is a cross-platform client (Windows, Mac and Linux) that enables users to drop any file into a Dropbox folder that is then synced to the web and the users' other computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web. Users may also upload files manually through a web browser. A free Dropbox account offers 2 GB of storage. Users may upgrade to 50 GB by paying a monthly or yearly fee. The total amount of storage space of both the free and fee-based accounts may be increased by an extra 3 GB for free accounts and 6 GB for fee-based accounts by referring others to the service.”
